29 FebToday in class, we will be generating discussion questions based on the topics.
We will use these topics to generate possible propositions or thesis statements.
Individually, you will make your selection and select three different sections of the novel that relate to your topic. After re-reading these sections, you will adjust your final proposition and begin your intro. You will have tomorrow’s class to further develop your essay. Due Wednesday March 8th.
The Escape Plan: Chapters 35-39
24 FebThe plan to free Jim from the Silas shed touches on many important themes of the novel. Twain uses this as an opportunity for humour but also to show the profound lack of judgment of all the characters involved. For the three main characters, answer the following questions and include evidence from the story to support your analysis.
For Tom, Huck and Jim
1) What is the character’s prime motivation in these chapters, i.e. what do they want?
2) To what “authority” is the character appealing to for their decision making?
3) How are the values of the character revealed by their actions?
And finally…
Choose three themes (not necessarily those already discussed) and explain how they are represented in this section of the novel. What serious social comments could Twain be trying to make?
Be prepared to discuss the answers to these questions with your fellow students on Monday.
